I've often described the Santa Cruz mountains as "magical because the of the redwoods that live there". The images that are being reported are devastating. Nearly every redwood in Big Basin is scorched. I am so so sad.
@Jazz I thought fire was essential for their seeds to pop or something.
@GeorgeG Yes, this is true. The fires have had a devastating effect nonetheless.
@Jazz
Sequoias live for that. Their pine cones sit on the branches until a fire makes them open and drop seeds in the newly sunny soil, and the top foot of thickness of the bark chars off but the deeper bark is fine. I kind of thought redwoods were the same and that's how they get so big.
That and timber companies don't want charred lumber.
