@JohnnyGenX @redenigma @BlueRevolution @WhiteRose I will say this about Brookline, MA cops. When I lived in the area and went to conferences on Deafness + Criminal Justice, they sent large contingents. Because of all the Deaf/deaf/HOH in their area in disabled housing they pushed officers to learn ASL and Deaf culture.
It is the only time I've seen humanization of a disabled community.
Most Deaf/deaf/HOH are at extreme risk because they'll consider you a risk if you don't respond.
@redenigma @JohnnyGenX @BlueRevolution @WhiteRose Being unable to speak is difficult. I hope he can sign or write.
It is called selective because the brain shuts down at times of great stress regarding the ability to speak. It's not like he gets to make a choice. It's probably neurotransmitter related.
Lots of Deaf/deaf/HoH folks are shot because they have no idea they're being told to stop.
Call for help and possibly die by cop. Huge problem in the disabled community.
@J_Windrow @JohnnyGenX @BlueRevolution @WhiteRose yeah, there's another of my concerns. kiddo has selective mutism. he literally cannot speak at all if he's anxious.
i don't know why it's called selective mutism, because it's not a choice to not be able to speak... calling it selective makes it sound like it IS a choice
