It's not the first time sitcoms/movies have set up someone pretending to be something they're not. Three's Company. Bosom Buddies. Tootsie. Mrs. Doubtfire. Soul Man is the only one of those dealing specifically with race as the deception (and I agree that it was cringeworthy) but there's a lot of shows that hinge on someone pretending to be something they're not for some kind of gain.
