Newbie here. Does anyone know how to block or filter out hashtags? Because there are some topics I desperately want to avoid like the plauge.

to fully block things you will want an end result like this, to block a term in any context.
Also be sure to uncheck "Whole word" for a more flexible match on the offending term.
