The short answer is that critical thinking must evolve to meet the challenge...and "a lie gets halfway around the world before the truth gets its boots on." Not original and not sexy, I know.
A kind of argument can be made that algos in SM are as lethal/destructive to the health of the mind and thinking, as cigarettes are to the health of the lungs and heart.
