I dunno why either! Hookers are some of the best people in the world!
I dont prescribe to the usage of what Carlin would call "soft language". Honest dirrct language that conveyed the emotion and meaning is meant to be edgy at times.
Sex worker sounds like something you find in the yellow pages.
Hooker is something you find on a corner that will give you a simple transaction. Money for a few minutes of dedicated personal love, without all the bullshit.

It's true, and the term "sex worker" could be used as a descriptor, if that would remove the "edge" from the subject. Although I personally like the word "hooker",, that's just me 🤷♂️
