unsettled wind chimes
the trees whispering rumors
of rain, of relief
faint light, fading fast,
lonely beacons of summer:
mid-july fireflies
reminder & reward,
the reason it's all worthwhile:
summer tomatoes
lone gladiola
droops, regretting its choice to
bloom in a heatwave
these picky eaters
bees snub the flower garden
to feast on lawn weeds
oddly relaxing
to watch someone work so hard
bustling bumblebee
I had no idea how big these things were until I saw one on a flatbed trailer at a state highway rest stop.
up close and still
a single wind turbine blade

a glimpse of former glory
sea of wildflowers
the sun slowly rose
red-eyed like the lone weary
traveler
distant slate blue line
surges, swirls to windy grays

Years ago, I went to a U2 concert and got there very early. So I had a tiny tailgate, party of 1.
hatchback open,
a picnic dinner, a good book:

Went paddleboarding today. A heron was in the shade on the shore, delicately toying with a small fish it had just caught. It seemed to have had better luck than the humans...
casting yet again
the heron enjoys his meal
the fisherman waits
the red-headed finch
dozes on the sun-drenched ledge
while i do at my desk
full, closed summer buds,
color peeking through the edge:
anticipation
the rising fireflies
outshine tonight's thin crescent
brief as they are
unexpected guest
is it time again so soon?
summer's first firefly
a mob of mayflies
bustling, oblivious
to their brevity
prefers the deep woods
small, occasionally prickly
creature of few words
