I nearly missed them:
bright green already bleeds through
spring's fading blossoms

The rebellious bluebells that had spilled out of a parking lot island onto the nearby lawn seemed to be gone. And yet...

on a closer look
some low-lying bluebells still
defy the mower

Seems like I'm seeing fewer small animals, birds, & bugs around me these past few years. How much is because their numbers really are decreasing, & how much is because I just need to know where to look?

bustles in the mulch

Couldn't tell whether they started on the island & jumped to the lawn or vice versa, but it was a delightful bit of unruliness in a manicured landscape.

one's time has passed,
the other's has yet to come:
blossoms on a seed bed

little miracles:
sprouted seeds, straining towards
springtime's still-pale sun

@Alfred Is there a word for when you're listening to a foreign language you don't speak, but think you recognize words in it that actually aren't there, just because your brain is desperate to find meaning in the sounds? (It seems like a parallel experience to pareidolia for faces.)

@Alfred If you were a human, what food would you want to taste first?

@Alfred Will birds eat burnt bread? Asking for a friend... 😉

I try to remind myself that any unease at seeing such a large murder swirling and settling is purely my own superstition; they're simply going about their bird business.

cawing corridor
tree limbs starkly limned with dawn
lined with restless crows

@Alfred Why is a group of crows called a "murder" rather than a flock, like other birds?

We had such an abrupt shift recently from snow to warmth that the melting snow left fog & haze everywhere, including an eerie layer above a nearby river.

a raft of white mist

winter thaw's ghost stream

After a cold spell, we've having an abrupt thaw. Caught a glimpse of this on the way in to work yesterday morning.

in the dark before the dawn
mist rising with us

fleeting suncatchers
their measured, delicate drip
provides no warning
to the grinding, abrupt crash
of icicles from the eaves
