As I recall, Velcro sneakers were used by parents who didn't want to waste time tying their kids shoes.
Those same kids became teenagers who started a trend of walking around with untied sneakers.
Not as a fashion statement, mind you, it was simply because they didn't know how to tie their shoelaces.
