@kay_dub @Cosmichomicide Unfortunately, we do end up bearing the costs just as we end bearing the costs for activities such as cigarette smoking and riding motorcycles without a helmet. All of these activities have externalities - the indirect effects of economic activities that affect people who are not directly involved in those activities. And in many cases the costs are direct as their own resources are inadequate to cover their medical needs and they become victims a burden on the state.

They're also a threat to the rest of us - in addition to being the modern equivalent of willing plaguebearers (spreading disease, especially if they come in contact with immunocompromised people), they also help incubate new, more infectious, and deadlier strains of various pathogens, contribute to antibiotic resistance, and assist pathogens evolve different antigens to evade the protection offered by vaccines.

@Cosmichomicide I drank raw milk as a kid every several weeks when we visited Mom's folks' dairy farm. It's just what they all drank and I never had any adverse affects from it. I suppose that any packaged, distributed raw milk product is a whole different animal from the pitcher that we used to dip out of the fresh milk holding tank. I'd not even consider drinking packaged raw milk today.

that said, i rarely drink raw milk now because i don't personally know the farm where it comes from, and the cleanliness & disease free status of the cows. there are too many things, including Avian influenza, that one can get from raw milk. pasteurization was invented & mandated for very good reasons.
Mr. Cosmic still knows the names of some of the cows from when he was growing up and as he put it, "A cow that is well today, is sick tomorrow."
He's still a huge milk drinker. I mean, we won't touch skim milk, but that's cause it's thin and nasty . 🤮
