I was in a BCP (business continuity planning) meeting and there was all this discussion around what to do if the network went down and we lost the phones.
Sometimes, progress isn't so obvious. You didn't need power or network for these things to make a call:
@AskTheDevil @Cosmichomicide I still have a landline for my hardwired security system. However, Verizon replaced the copper with fiber, and eliminated the backup lead-acid battery some years ago. They now supply a box that holds 10 D cells. If the power fails, you have to manually switch on the box that contains the D cells. It lasts a few hours. Not very effective if you're away when the alarm goes off.
@Cosmichomicide Well, they did use power, it was just typically separate from the regular power grid, and came via the phone company. If those lines went down, you still couldn't make calls.
