It's apparently due to selective survival.

@Coctaanatis Interesting. I don't have a subscription so i poked around a couple of studies about selective survival. It occurs to me that those lucky ones who dodge alzheimers, heart disease etc have less hospital visits/procedures and take less meds, too. Nothing against that but I read somewhere that the US uses 75% of the worlds meds yet has the lowest life expectancy in the west.

@JLong There's a large segment of the population with poor access to healthcare, and we're at or near the top in morbid obesity and opioid abuse.
