I went to the original study, and it seems they drew veteran data from a previous set of research, first published in 2011 and probably itself collected a bit earlier.
Very confusing to the average reader for these authors not to explain that this study made use of earlier brain scans, but it's become common practice to draw on existing neuro-data to create larger sample sets for analysis.
