They desperately crave uniformity and predictability in their world in order to feel safe. The knowledge that people are in any way different from themselves terrifies them, so they seek absolute control over others in order to enforce absolute uniformity of thought. Only when everyone is identical to themselves will they finally feel safe from boogeymen.
