When we were living on the farm, a local referendum was on the ballot. The local school needed funds and the tax required would be minimal per household. We voted YES for the same reason Green gives - it benefits all of us to have well educated neighbors.
The referendum was defeated by a huge margin, the school was closed, and as far as I know the people there are still complaining because their kids have to be bused to another town
