Hotei means "cloth sack", and he carried one filled with candy and toys he'd hand out to children.
A monk asked Hotei to explain the fundamental meaning of the Buddhadharma. Hotei dropped his sack to the ground and looked sad.
The monk then asked him to explain the actualization of the Buddhadharma. He picked up his sack, laughed, and went on his way.
@mcfate to have great enlightenment about illusion is to be a Buddha. To have great illusion about enlightenment is to be a sentient being.
