Malignant (2021) dir. James Wan

It’s 2 AM and I’m watching this for the first time… sure why not? Insomnia has been one of my greatest educators, especially when it comes to movies…

This one got semi-spoiled for me, so I feel like all the tension got drained out of it. I will say it is kind of odd, how it feels a bit like a reprise of the first Annabelle movie.

@Apocryphiliac Now, I *have* seen a fair amount of giallo, and this one just didn't quite do it for me. Although maybe I need a rewatch? Some folks clearly saw some stuff in there I didn't.

@thudfactor it’s funny that you mention it… it’s definitely Wan’s love letter to the giallo… 🤔

@Apocryphiliac Very self-consciously so, which tends to weaken the prospect a bit. I felt like Happy Death Day hit closer to the mark, maybe because they weren't trying to make a giallo?

@thudfactor I understand… this is kind of a clunky movie. It’s a weird thing to complain about, and on the other hand, there are definitely some sophisticated camera techniques, animated dream-sequences and things of that nature that you have to hand it to them… I like things that feel a little more improvised, maybe? But perhaps it’ll grow on me. Uh, no pun… 😏

@thudfactor on the other hand, you know, I’m happy to see a “horror director” getting resources to produce a film like this. Wan knows how to use a camera…👍👍

@thudfactor I like HDD a lot. I am fairly easy to please within the familiar confines of a horror movie, giallo, gothic tales… I can find something to appreciate in most any of it. 👍
