@voltronic In the Tolkien legendarium, the Maia who guides the moon across the night sky is Tilion. Tilion was a servant of the Valar Aulë and Oromë. He fell in love with Arien, another Maia who guided the Sun, but his love was unrequited. Tilion's task was to steer the Moon on its course through the sky, but he often struggled to maintain a steady path, causing the moon to wax and wane irregularly. This inconsistency of the Moon's phases played a role in the creation of the sun and moon as they are known in Middle-earth.
