There's an interesting line in here, "...the novelist Jami Attenberg told me. She continued, β€œI think your loyalty is to your community; it’s not to the platform. I’m not in service of the people who are providing the technology.”

Now, maybe context has been cut or something, but it's not an either/or choice. You can open an account on a new platform and keep your old one.Why would you feel loyal to people who can't be arsed to open an account on a different platform?

Actually, here's another f-ed up bit

"Chris Black, the co-host of the podcast β€œHow Long Gone” and a prolific tweeter, argued that the people threatening to leave are merely virtue-signalling. β€œBeing anti-Elon is more important to them than continuing to use a platform they enjoy,” Black said"

Supporting a person whose views you find abhorrent doesn't affect enjoyment? Would he say the same if Musk were a rapist or something?

This whole article is coming across as more than a bit sus now, tbh

Sorry, I'm from the . I know the media landscape here, the biases of various news outlets and whatnot, I'm less familar with the US. Is The New Yorker normally this dickish?

@66ALW99 I think the news media are very defensive. is a major channel for promoting stories to people who are not regular readers of a magazine or newspaper, particularly in other regions. Their subscriber growth models are all built on you sharing stories on and .

@peterquirk I remember around the time of the 'Arab Sprint', when social media was realy starting to take off as a mainstream thing, you heard a lot about how it was the future of journalism, sidestepping censorship and all that guff.

You don't hear so much about how it can be fairly easily co-opted by organised interests, do you?

@66ALW99 It's probably not a coincidence that the Saudis provided some of the financing for Musk's acquisition of . They would have leverage to demand information about dissidents, at home or abroad. However, it seems they may have spent a couple of billion to burn down, which might be even more effective.

@peterquirk @jjmacnab had a theory about it which I saw earlier today, to do with monetisation

Thing I'm noticing more and more lately about social media is that it allows multiple actors to get involved in funding/fighting any one front/issue that suits their interests. It's almost like a pick'n'mix of political interference. Don't like our 'Free Speech' option? Try the 'Immigrants Are Bad', that's always popular! πŸ™‚

Hi @66ALW99 ! First, an answer. I don't like them so I think I'd vote yes on the dickish call.

This is a great opportunity to ask if you know about CoSo's integration with Fact Layer. It's a browser plugin that will show you the leanings of any site in a blue to red scale. There are five total ratings. It will highlight every link with the appropriate color for that media outlet. I find it very useful in preparing myself for a link will say.

You van find instruction in the FAQ. Cheers!

@66ALW99 Now that I see the color of the link by showing your thread, its green, which means satire. Odd. Still don't like the 'zine though.

@NihilVidere I wonder if there may be legal influences at play? I can imagine that the general population (including judges) understand social media and algorithms slightly better nowadays and would look for a non-algorithmic scapegoat when legal shit hits the fan

@NihilVidere Thanks - I don't often use the desktop version ( only on here tonight due to a long tale about multiple email accounts, forgotten passwords and other intrigue), but I'll look into that plugin πŸ™‚

@66ALW99 well peeps seemed to enjoy the place just fine while the idiot was a prolific tweeter himself. they didn't leave b/c of the idiot being there. they're leaving b/c the idiot is mismanaging their data, privacy, security, & killing the enjoyment of the space w/ peeps who are trolling & spreading hate unchecked.

@singlemaltgirl I'm not so sure, tbh. I think there's a distinction between having a troll ON a platform and having a troll RUN the platform. IAlso, it may well be the case that people are learning more about the issues around data, security etc BECAUSE the new owner is a gigantic cock πŸ™‚
