From the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this English dark gray wool suit is from the mid-1700s. It's a good example of the sort of clothes a somewhat successful merchant or a well-to-do farmer might own.
The cuffs and the coat interior are lined with plain tan silk, to allow the coat to go on over the shirt without pulling.
I like seeing something a little more common like this, rather than just the aristocratic stuff.
@tyghebright - Was in the historical reenactment for many years. Had a friend that said people took one of two approaches - museum vs. terrarium.
Museum - We found this exact thing
Terrarium - If you stood in the street this is what you would have seen.
I like "museum" for the science facts and "terrarium" for the social facts.
