I'm a fan of Critical Role and have learned things about storytelling from watching their DM. For example:
Make the stakes real. When there's a real chance that a player character could die, the battle and its outcome will be more satisfying. Don't be afraid to really push characters to their limits, or even to let them fail.
Modulate the tone. Embrace moments of silliness in the middle of an intense battle, have a light session after one that was intense.
