I feel so smug. My daughter hates handwriting practice, so we used a craft kit to create some pompom stick puppets, and used them to write a story, and I threw it together with some sloppy vector graphics of her puppets and a font made for this kind of stuff, now she is THRILLED with her little practice booklet (about 10 pages).

Though I can't take the entire credit, the idea of teaching to read by using a story from their own words was taught to me in a literacy seminar, and letting kids make stories with puppets has been around forever. I need to get my hands on one of those guides for teachers helping kids illustrate their own books or comics.
