I have some insight into how bad the situation we are in is. The media is doing a poor job of capturing just how desperately scientists wan† to communicate the significance of the moment we are in: Earth will be uninhabitable in 300 years, and now, I don't think there is much chance that we can turn the ship in time. We are responsible for a planetary extinction, and by the time the population comes to understand this, nothing they do will matter.

@wyrmeboi: That's in larger part because the press are people, and there are some who don't believe in it, for whatever reasons. Also, the press rather fancy themselves experts themselves, and the press are run like/as for-profit businesses. They can't really get a conversation going. That's not their function, really. There's is "reporting" and for some decades now also "interpreting" the news for readers, listeners, viewers. Also, everyday people don't always respect science or scientists...

@wyrmeboi: ...because there's so much pop science, including sham science, and science and tech are taken so much for granted that Joe and Jane Q. Public will attempt to argue from authority, argue from "Question Authority", and then when they get trounced by people that verifiably know WTF they're talking about, the people's egos do a protecc, and they whine, "Well, *I* don't believe it!"
