They have been trained and incited to believe that 'those others' are going to take away their historic place at the front of every line and they will be forced to compete on a more level playing field. The white patriarchy has been baked into the system in America since the founding and they feel they have been given their rightful place on top by god. A certain segment of US politicians feed this division on a daily basis.
It's fascism 101.
