(This is about Canadian politics but rhymes with what’s going on in the US around the rights of trans kids.)

There’s no such thing as ‘parents’ rights’

Parents have a right to raise their children in accordance with their own values, most notably their religious values. But that doesn’t give them the right to override their children’s own rights under the Charter, notably their children’s rights to life and security of the person.

@corlin The concept of parents' rights cannot not sound like ownership or control. As stated, it's revealing a massive glitch in our culture; children are often regarded, and treated, as property.

The reality is that when kids go to school, they disappear into a world that is opaque and foreign to many parents.

Opportunistic conservatives have weaponised this ignorance with propaganda, and tied it to their LGBTQ+ ignorance, and their anti-LGBTQ+ propaganda.

Children's rights are human rights.

@corlin @sumpnlikefaith Yes! Children are not chattels any more than wives. A parent's* job is surely to fight for the rights *of their children* not to treat them as political footballs for their own ends.

*I am not a parent, nor have I ever been.
