@stueytheround @homebird Sam was the only one who was tempted by the Ring, carried it, and willingly put it down. Samwise Gamgee is the true Lord of the Ring. Nobody else mastered it like that. They were all used and consumed by it instead.
i read somewhere that Sam represented the "batsman" in British military, for whom Tolkien had great love and admiration.
even not knowing the tradition at all, yet the character shines forth with heroic light so that its meaning is clear.
