Apologies if someone has asked this before, but ...

If you are going for a US Security clearance, don't they review your credit and bank statements? Ask if you have been accused of any felonies? Wouldn't that prevent someone from say said clearance?

Assuming the above, how in the Actual FUCK can someone be considered for say an extremely high position with said clearance level access?

@JGNWYRK they absolutely do (or--they were in the early aughts anyway when I had to apply for one).

The one exception I'm aware of is the office of president. The presumption is that anyone the american people saw fit to elect to that high office would be trustworthy. 🙄

@rpardee people en masse also thought it was cool to ingest tide pods, so not sure I would count on that.

Seems like a glaring loophole to me.

@JGNWYRK oh yeah. If the GOP is no longer willing or able to vet their candidates, then I think we are going to need legislation to require candidates to e.g., disclose their tax returns, amount of debt to foreign interests, truly divest from active business interests, etc.

Unfortunately the horse is already outside the barn at this point...
