If someone is listed as a possible second cousin, the person has three people in their tree, all private. If a person is a possible 8th cousin, they will have 3,000 people in their tree with whom I still can't find a match. The inverse proportionality of

@poemblaze A second cousin is far enough removed that it's unlikely to be any sort of issue. A third cousin, forget it.

And a cousin that is anything "removed" from you is not related directly by blood, but by marriage.

I remember when someone found out Dan Quayle was like 9th cousins with Bush, and they acted like it was nepotism, and I was like "I'm probably their 9th cousin".

@AskTheDevil And I'm talking about trying to figure out how they're related to me for genealogical purposes. The closer they're related, the less info I seem to get in their family tree in order to figure it out.

@poemblaze Ah. Are they trying to upsell you or something?

@AskTheDevil Nope. I'm just a genealogy maniac who wants to know how everyone on earth is related to each other. I'm perfectly reasonable.

@poemblaze @AskTheDevil

Seems like a good place to leave this, although you guys probably already know this:

@Tarnagh @AskTheDevil Thanks. I was going to post one of those a few days ago and forgot.

@poemblaze @AskTheDevil

I saw that ages ago and every once in a while it comes in handy that I still remember it.

Generally around the time I'm at a family reunion. 😂

@poemblaze @AskTheDevil

Wow! Yeah that's useful! My mother's side of the family can currently field at least six living generations that I'm aware of. Husband's side doesn't go that deep but it's a lot wider - his grandmother was the oldest of 13 and even he needs a flow chart at family reunions. 😂

@Tarnagh @AskTheDevil I have a half brother born in 1947. I was born 19 years later. My dad had a sister born 13 years before him. My grandma was born in 1903 and her earliest sibling was born in ~1886. So I can meet people who have my great grandparents as their fourth great grandparents.
