I make a conscious effort to let people like what they like without being like “ew why” but please, I’m begging you all to acknowledge that kettle dyed and hand painted yarns don’t look even 1/10 as nice knit up as they do in a skein and let them go into the West and remain Galadriel.
@redenigma I’m not having any issues, I just dislike the effect in general and I think people often pick kettle dyed yarns for unsuitable projects.
@lemontart oh... well, yes. people always have & probably always will, pick unsuitable for projects (or fabrics, etc). that lovely skein of dip dye is NOT EVER going to make pretty lace...
when Mmario died i was given this yarn from his stash & asked to knit one of his patterns with it. short of overdyeing it, there is no way to knit a shawl that isn't going to look like crap with the pooling. i'm going to put it on the loom & weave a scarf instead.
@redenigma that’s a great idea! It looks lovely all wound like that.
@lemontart it does, but i got 3/4 through a circular shawl (Queen Anne's Lace) & it was pooling so badly i couldn't stand working on it. it's for the RESCU fundraiser auction, an annual event at Faire, but no one would bid anything on something that ugly.
@lemontart so, i'm not using as i was requested, but i seriously doubt Leo ever meant to use that yarn for a shawl.
@lemontart i feel that way about speckled yarn. hand painted can be really great (planned pooling is awesome) or pretty blech... that depends on the skill of the dyer.
kettle dyed should be mostly solid. what issues are you having?
