@AkomoCombine
What does the UN refugee protocols say about "Avoiding Conscription"?
BTW, my great grandfather was conscripted to fight in the Crimean War. He was Lithuanian.
Then, his son, my grandfather, was told by his mother to go to America because the Russians were coming back to do it again.
@Render @jurban @AkomoCombine There is a lot coming over the border here, even illegally.
Part of the problem here is..... we don't believe all of them are actually refugee, but instead some form of sleepers.
But then again, Finns have some History(TM) with Russians and a lot can stem from that. Russ-hate isn't as dead as young people hope.
@Fiikus_goddess @Render @jurban @AkomoCombine I imagine Poland is in the same spot as Finland but nonetheless Ren is right they should be treated as refugees. The sleepers I'm sure will be found out.
@Saorsa @Render @jurban @AkomoCombine
They should... but that needs them to declare themselves as refugees. Most tell they are here for a vacation.. the border hotels are packed with male "tourists".
@Fiikus_goddess @Render @jurban @AkomoCombine You're right. No reason to hide that really.
@Saorsa @Fiikus_goddess @Render @jurban
Sleepers would have to communicate with the regime in Moscow.
We are fast approaching to cutting all communications with Russia completely with the exception of POTUS and Putin.
@AkomoCombine @Saorsa @Render @jurban
Communicating from Finland to Russia isn't really a task..
A loud yell might do it in certain parts...
@Fiikus_goddess @Saorsa @Render @jurban
The Finns, the Swedes and the Poles are going to be leaned on heavily for advice due to their experience with Russia in peace and war.
@AkomoCombine @Fiikus_goddess @Render @jurban Hopefully only for advice. ๐ค
@Fiikus_goddess @AkomoCombine @Render @jurban Considering the Russians use unsecured comms, anyone with a $20 Baofang radio will be able to find them.
@Saorsa @Fiikus_goddess @Render @jurban ๐คฃ Right?
Then why are we not hearing about "mass-refugees" instead of "Russians escaping conscription"?
Seem like if there is a protocol already in place it should be activated.
I think the world would revise their assessment of what is happening to these Russians.
To be clear, I'm not challenging your response. I'm just trying to make sense out of the ethical vectors swarming over this situation.
@jurban @Render Im guessing here so bear with me-
Many Russians didnt think they would be conscripted because they believed they had one of the most powerful militaries in the world.
At least on paper they do.
However, when the world responded with sanctions and then operational silence for Ukraine the last 3-4 weeks, something changed.
All the trash talking over decades have come home to roost.
Many of these Russians had lives and income outside the military (Stop laughing in the back)
@jurban @Render The truth is they are escaping conscription.
However being forced to fight also places them in a category that qualifies them to apply for refugee status in neighboring states.
Its why many from Iraq, Iran and Syria have moved West. They do not want their kids to become warlords or canon fodder.
@jurban They would be considered IDP or internally displaced person.
"An internally displaced person, or IDP, is someone who has been forced to flee their home but never cross an international border."
In addition they also would need to request asylum.
"When people flee their own country and seek sanctuary in another country, they apply for asylum โ the right to be recognized as a refugee and receive legal protection and material assistance. "
@jurban @AkomoCombine
They're refugees.
Europe took in over 1 million Syrian refugees, many of them evading Assad's conscription and/or secret police.
Why is this any different? Why is this even a question?
