OMG.
Kinky Friedman has died at the age of 79. I met him when he was running for Texas Governor. I've read his books and went to a couple of his music venues.
Kinky was not a native Texan, but he once said that he had to come to Texas because we were the only state that would put up with his nonsense.
One of my fav Kinky slogans...
"Remember: Y'all is singular. All y'all is plural. All y'all's is plural possessive."
Thanks to @Traces_of_Texas for posting.
He wrote memoirs with Willie Nelson

Happy to not be a Texan.

LOVE being a Texan.

My favorite Texas stuff:
Robert Rodriguez & his whole crew
ZZ Topp
The Krayolas
My least favorite things about Texas:
Their ideas about education & reality, attitude toward women & anyone who isn't white & male, the cowboy fantasy, delusion of superiority (everything is bigger & better in Texas), gun obsession & the resulting serial killers, border paranoia ...
Texas was once a swing state, I miss that.
@Traces_of_Texas @Maude
The time period was decades ago (remember the Democrat President Johnson?), the 1960s. And I know I am painting with a broad brush & that there are still quite a few Democrats & liberals out there. But it is clearly never enough, given its steady march towards right wing fascism. My interest in Texas politics comes from having been born there. (1)
(2) My high hopes for Wendy Davis' campaign for governor of Texas were dashed when Texas once again picked another GOP reactionary (Abbott) to lead them. Currently, women are being criminalized, state-wide. If, as you suggest, Texas has no hope of swinging left, then I guess you are all screwed. People leave a place when life becomes impossible, & Texas just seems impossible to me now.
