My paternal grandfather had to run a complex banking scam to show he was much better off financially than he actually was in order to buy his fiancé's freedom from the Nazis (she was being held in Gurs concentration camp in France). My maternal grandfather was a civilian who taught WW2 radio operators. Neither was a veteran, but they both fought against fascism in their own way.
They'd be ashamed of us today.
@ianthealy I’ve been thinking of my Norwegian ancestors. They would be horrified.
@ianthealy: My paternal grandparents openly fought the Klan in South Carolina in the '40s, '50s, and '60s. She was an English teacher and guidance counselor, and he was a lawyer, magistrate, and later a circuit court judge. Papa was in the Navy in WW2 in the Pacific, but one of his prized possessions was a German soldier's Mauser a friend of his took off a Nazi he killed during the Battle of the Bulge.
They'd be fighting mad if they were alive today.
