Based on our recent experience, I think it's imperative to change the law. On quite a few jobs I've had over the years, I had to pass different security clearances BEFORE I was offered the job... and then more advanced clearances after.
Anyone running for President & Vice President should undergo a rigorous security clearance check . They should also have extensive physicals (including mental exams) by choses doctors (not their own) have have 10 years of tax returns.
