It was one of the first movies I remember ever seeing at a theater. That and Sword in the Stone. I suspect it was on re-release, as they did before DVDs and streaming were a thing. And I think it scarred me for life. Such a sad story.

I tried several times to read the book. In fact, I believe I still remember the opening sentence - "I am a cur." Had to go find out what cur meant, I was so young.
But I could never get through it because I knew what was going to happen and didn't want to be re-traumatized.
