I looked at 100 ads for menstrual products spanning 100 years — shame and secrecy prevailed

"Rather than a natural occurrence, menstruation was framed as an illness."

I mean, it's not fun, but why the shaming? That's ridiculous.

In the US, I remember as recently as the 90s being the recipient of snarky comments by the male convenience store cashier when buying menstrual products at his workplace.

If only I'd had more confidence back then I would've told him off but I remember almost dying of embarrassment. At least it felt that way at the time. Such bs.

@estherschindler 1969/70, 8th grade. teacher rounded up all the girls in one classroom and verbally beat us to a pulp because "a boy" knew one of us was menstruating. She claimed even her husband did not know when it was her time of the month.
Yea, sure!
