I read about a study a couple of years ago which showed that men did better than women at math... until they told the women to imagine they were responding *like a typical man*.
Simply imagining that they were men brought the differences to nearly nothing.
(The opposite did not occur for men imaging they were answering like women -- in that case, there was no noticeable change.)
