All i know is spam has dropped off to nothing since i started using a VPN regularly.
My ISP is blind - all it sees is data bytes going back and forth.
Browsers cant target me with ads since i have no trail other than the current session im in.
Can i declare myself a cyber security expert and say whatever i like?
Is that how it works?

Id say the spam thing is more coincidence than anything VPN can't necessarily stop spam - email spam right?
Some, experts, will say you don't need a vpn on public wifi because everything is HTTPS these days - I'm not an expert but I'd never use a public wifi without a vpn - id actually never use any public wifi even with a vpn 😂 for me its hotspot from smartphone if i need to fire up laptop when out & about

I have a vpn on almost 24hrs a day on all my devices mainly, like you said, to stop my ISP snooping - and for seeing some stuff on other sites that use algorithms switching vpn server at times to different countries can get you different results via searches etc....
Oh yeah - its quite awesome seeing stuff in japanese.

I use mullvad as you can pay each month, no recurring payments or rolling subscription, its just under £5 a month

Use that on all my devices - you can also pay in app via android google play store in app purchases - but you'll need to create an account online first - each device gets unique ID name once you've created account just install on devices and log in the ID is creates automatically
Other vpns let you pay monthly but most are almost double that price of mullvad if you only wanna pay monthly and not tied into a year or two subscription
So imo mullvad is the best priced and a great service
