Some CoSo brainstorming and input requests needed. 🙏
My mil is wanting a laptop. Tbh it scares the shit out of me because she is not savvy in the ways of the internet and she will be on our home network. *sigh*
I totally understand why she wants one. I seen some inexpensive chromebooks out there and of course there are thousands of others.
Suggestions would be greatly appreciated for an 83 yr old who wants to surf the net. I will be the it chick so please help me keep my sanity 😁
@Faay
If it's really just going to be a net browser, a Chromebook is a decent idea. The Acer Chromebooks are quite good; that's what they have us on at work.
@voltronic @Faay I'd second that
Chromebooks are easy to use and maintain - no anti virus software needed really- and Acer is a good model and always my preference manufactured Chromebooks I pick
with android apps and play store pre-installed also they are good - can even run Linux apps for more advanced user though
Updates work flawlessly in background also you'll get a quick notification telling you to restart device to finish update if 2/3 seconds later your back online
@Faay just in case you are wondering about the no anti virus needed - each web page and application runs in a restricted environment called a "sandbox." - Chromebooks have multiple security layers that help protect them from viruses, including the automatic updates. If a virus does get through one layer, it may still have to overcome the others.

the Linux environment isn't included in that but that needs to be enabled by the owner/admin of the device
@ecksmc @voltronic I like the sound of that.
@Faay @voltronic if you do go with a Chromebook install malwarebytes chrome extension and use free - which adds another layer of protection mainly against phishing, dodgy sites etc....
You don't necessarily need a full antivirus software app running
👍
@ecksmc @voltronic ahh gotcha, browserguard. I misread.
