Well this is a terrible idea. #cososec
Mozilla Firefox to let you export saved passwords in plain text
@voltronic most, if not all, password managers allow you to export in CSV format
i have all mine exported in CSV then encrypted using my private PGP key and stored on a hard drive that is sitting in a drawer
exported from bitwarden
also do the same with all my back-up codes for 2FA which are on a seperate hard drive in a separate drawer
need to padlock they drawers now also 😆
btw you can also instal firefox password manger app "lockwise" and keep on a seperate device as back up
@ecksmc
I also use bitwarden, but have never exported my passwords. Good to know that if I did, they would be plaintext!
One recommendation for you: put that really important stuff on optical discs as well, instead of just hard drives. Very stable over the long-term, if you are careful about what media you buy. I can still read my 20-year old CD-R backups with no problems, and I still run BD-R backups of important stuff every few months.
@voltronic oh btw
saying all that
i get why this is a bad idea for firefox to do it or any other browser
people, being people, some will download that file and leave it on their device unencrypted < no doubt about that happening
at least with PW manager apps/services most won't download that file unless they are switching manger service and most use apps for that which don't allow exporting files to be downloaded so they don't know about it
@voltronic and i just checked bitwarden app and you can export from that lol
/shrug
so what do i know 🤣
i must be thinking about the last PW manager i used or one before that even lol i did use one that didn't have a export feature via the app
