Just thinking out loud here - could the bullet possibly have ricochet off something and either it or sharpnel grazed his ear?
The angle of the teleprompter that was on the right compared to the crowd behind him and the direction of the bullets (according to this photo) don't make sense to me
@Horrrflmlvr I have a hard time picturing a bullet grazing his right ear if the shot came from our left at the angle it did, the people that got hit by bullets that were BEHIND him - with the direction he was facing it would have been hard to simply graze his ear without a ricochet (the angle looks off) - but the teleprompter looks intact
@duglop true, with such a shot, there would be more damage than what is pictured.
And also , if such a shot happened and the shot struck hard things, the richochet effect and the shrapnel from such a thing would hurt others , and not just 3 , maybe more.

@Horrrflmlvr an AR-15 shell is small caliber - about the size of a pencil eraser, but high velocity - a deflection could have hit trump's ear at that angle, the person that died was behind trump at a different angle to the shooter = better chance to actually be hit by a bullet
@duglop yup, and the impact was worse for the person who died. Not for turkeytrump.
@duglop also such bullets are handled well by experts, not wannabees.
