Every once in a while, my D&D group will bring up something from a previous adventure (an encounter, a NPC, a death). Those are the moments that I, as the DM, get really pleased with the stories I try to tell. They linger. ☺️

D&D, done correctly, is a collaborative storytelling exercise. I DM'd a group of 8-15 players for years, 40 years ago, and there are still epic stories we re-tell, and catch phrases still used.

"Are there any pony-sized holes?", asked at every campsite after an encounter once with giant ants.

"He's evil; He's evil!"

"Come and get me now, Set!"

And the always ominous: "Roll for Initiative."

@danalan my favorite is their reactions when I say, "Are you sure you want to do that?"

Now, I just do it randomly to throw them off. 😀

If they're busy discussing things & not paying attention, I start rolling 8-siders - lots of 8-siders - and making notes.

When they realize, the expressions are priceless.
