I've been in web development more than 20 years, and have seen the bandwidth jump myself. All bloat! In the days of dialup, low-bandwidth versions were common.
Your effort really strikes a chord with me! I've always pondered alternative/backup systems, and love low-tech approaches. Mesh networks also perk my ears up.
