Rail

In America, rail has been totally fucked since the very beginning.... Except for three glorious years at the beginning of WW1, when because rail could not deliver fright on time, to the docks. The US Government took all rail out of private hands an nationalized it. Within 2 months, trains ran on time, had full employment, and delivered fright to waiting ships.

@corlin It's such a mark of your care with language, Corlin, that when you use terms like "totally fucked" they feel 100% deserved and accurate to the situation. Thank you for sharing this history.

@MLClark

Thanks.

Remember that their term "Robber Baron" was coined for rail monopolies. And the first anti-trust laws were written to put them in their place. Since then American rail has completed capture of the regulators. And dollar for dollar, have more monopoly power today than they did then.

@corlin This is why I love CoSo. We all have distinct areas of knowledge, most of us have integrity in admitting our gaps and avoiding bad faith argument, and as such, there's *so* much we can learn from each other.

I appreciate this brief, framing overview very much. Looking forward to doing a deeper dive once caught up in my work. Thanks again for sharing.
