I just used a button from the enormous tin of old buttons, which justifies not only the tin, but a whole garage full of 'stuff that someday might come in handy'.
Whenever I get a new-to-me old sewing machine or box of parts, one of the fun parts is sorting through all the little odds n ends. As long as the thread isn't dry rotted, I'll use it. If the snaps aren't rusted, into my stash they go. Same for buttons and needles and pins. I sew, so it's all useful to me.
