Growing up in sitcoms and in wider media, I always saw the dads who were happy and proud of their lawn care routines. When the hell does that start?

@carver I think you have to buy in to the idea that maintaining a difficult-to-care for, unattractive, water-intensive plant species, and an ability to do unecessary manual labor is a sign of manhood.

I think the fact that my lawn is a jungle where interlopers might become lost, or bitten by snakes, or attacked by hornets is much more manly than a nicely-manicured lawn.
