So heres the thing. I've woken up scared. I've an underactive thyroid condition (Autoimmune, Hashimotos, controlled with Levothyroxine - t4 and the odd bit of Thyronine - T3) and googling like mad I can only find bits about any effect of #Coronavirus #Corvid19 on people with this condition, clearly cos the science is just emerging. The British Thyroid Foundation say its probably fine, no increased risk but I have issues with them anyway over many things in UK thyroid treatment world 1/
.. and that basically means that my own immune system attacks my own thyroid, causing it to malfunction. Heres the really scary bit - the cytokine storm that occurs in some covid-19 patients is caused by an already over zealous immune system attacking the virus and wrecking total havoc. Clearly the science is emerging so its difficult to ascertain whether this applies. Sorry for rambling but I guess it helps to get it down. Does anyone else on here have this condition? What are you thoughts? /
@Zailrand I can kind of understand your worry. I have a nearly non-functional thyroid and use levothyroxine too...but I have several other conditions that I have to worry about more. I haven't even gotten around to the thyroid.
@Zailrand I've essentially isolated myself.
@Lindy I've been off work last 2 wedks so essentially I have been, but not quite by design... I think I'm gonna have to call my boss today and discuss these fears with him in full and decide best course of action as I'm due back at work tuesday..
@Zailrand I have autoimmune problems too. I don't have any thoughts on it, because I don't understand the science. I have to trust my doctor, I guess. I can do a virtual visit to discuss it with her.
@Zailrand I have Hashimotos. Managed by meds. Worried about that as a condition that could put me at risk. It is unknown. Prepare for social distancing to protect yourself, is all I can say.
@Ac2alLivingScientist pretty much what I'm doing atm...
@Zailrand My guy had metastatic papillary thyroid cancer (among other things) Constant fear of not being able to access his meds as he has absolutely no thyroid.
@carmahaz 😔 Hope he comes through this OK x
@Zailrand Thank you...Fear of not getting meds is real.
Now heres the thing.. Because in UK the thyroid treatment and diagnosis regimes are very unnuanced I've had endless arguments with Dr's re treatment etc, particularly when my thyroid state has changed to become either more hypo or sometimes hyper.. To this date although I know I have Hashimotos (due to antibody tests) as opposed to acquired through damage hypothyroidism Dr's won't attach that as a label as they say its irrelevant to treatment. Which is fine except Hashimotos is autoimmune 2/
