On this day in 1780, the Great Hurricane with estimated winds of 200 mph devastated Barbados. Levelling most buildings and causing over 4,000 deaths, the hurricane destroyed churches, ships, and homes, leaving the island in ruins. It remains the deadliest Atlantic hurricane on record.
