Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series of books are such a painful violation of the “show, don’t tell” rule that I remained forever disgusted with anything Sherlock Holmes since my youth.
I didn’t know know anything about writing back then but I already felt like that was some exemplar bad writing that gets praise for reasons mysterious to my understanding.
@Vonzales Pablo Picasso once said, "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist".
Break the rules you've learned when the writing calls for it. A Sherlock Holmes story in which we only watch him solve crimes and his methods are never explained would be confusing or outright boring.
