Does anyone know where I could find a course description and syllabus for sociology typical for 1st year students. I realize universities and colleges don't usually like to have these "for public consumption", or at least they didn't when I went to university. I'm interested in diving into this field but it would be helpful not to jump into the deep end, so to speak.

yale has free courses online too. perhaps there's something there.

You might check M.I.T.'s Open Courseware. I believe they have some of their humanities courses as well as the hardcore techie stuff.
