So...I use tweetdeck for twitter, so obviously, I love the way that CS uses the same layout. However...I can't seem to figure out how to add additional panels beyond the default firehose, friends, and notifications and keep them pinned there. Everything else opens in the 4th panel next to them and doesn't stick. Is the customization Pro only?

You were only missing the "Pin" step.
The search results columns are by default disposable, i.e. un-pinned.
Once pinned you can move them too in order to arrange them how you like.
@Spiritedrinoa yeah. do a search or a hashtag and it'll spawn a column, which you then click in top right corner sliders picture and pin it.
